Developing a Treatment Plan

The importance of creating an advanced kidney cancer treatment plan

The treatment of advanced kidney cancer is a journey with many steps. And, just as you would do for other journeys, it is important to make a plan of action. Remember, there are many different treatments for advanced kidney cancer. That is why knowing as much as possible about advanced kidney cancer can help you and your health care provider determine the journey that is right for you.

The steps on your treatment journey

The steps on your treatment journey can involve both surgery and medication. Remember, it is common to be treated with more than one medicine. At each stage of treatment, there are medicines that can help. An oncologist, a doctor who diagnoses and treats cancer, will work with you to create a treatment plan early on so you know what to expect.

The exact order of the steps that you may take on your treatment journey will be unique to you. Your journey will be the result of discussions between you and your health care provider at various stages in your treatment. Still, the treatment of advanced kidney cancer usually happens in the following order:

  • Surgery: Removing all or part of the kidney
  • First-line therapy: The first treatment used to treat the advanced cancer. It is also called primary therapy or primary treatment
  • Second-line therapy: Treatment that is given when first-line therapy does not work or stops working
  • Third-line therapy and beyond: Treatment that is given when second-line therapy has failed to work or stops working

AFINITOR® (everolimus) Tablets is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with advanced kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma or RCC) when certain other medicines (ie, sunitinib or sorafenib) have not worked.
