Developing a Treatment Plan

The importance of creating an advanced kidney cancer treatment plan

The treatment of advanced kidney cancer is a journey with many steps. And, just as you would do for other journeys, it is important to make a plan of action. Remember, there are many different treatments for advanced kidney cancer. That is why knowing as much as possible about advanced kidney cancer can help you and your doctor determine the journey that is right for you.

The steps on your treatment journey

The steps on your treatment journey can involve both surgery and medication. Remember, it is common to be treated with more than one medicine and, at each stage of treatment, there are medicines that can help. An oncologist will work with you to create a treatment plan early on so you know what to expect.

The exact sequence of steps that you may take on your treatment journey will be unique to you and will be the result of discussions between you and your doctor at various stages in your treatment. However, the treatment of advanced kidney cancer usually proceeds with the following four steps:

  • Surgery: Removing all or part of the kidney
  • First-line therapy: The first medicine used to treat a cancer. It is also called primary therapy or primary treatment
  • Second-line therapy: Medicine that is given when first-line therapy does not work, stops working, or has to be stopped because of intolerable side effects
  • Third-line therapy: Medicine that is given when both first- and second-line therapies have failed to work, stop working, or have to be stopped because of intolerable side effects

AFINITOR® (everolimus) Tablets is a prescription medicine used to treat adults with advanced kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma or RCC) when certain other medicines (ie, Sutent® [sunitinib] or Nexavar® [sorafenib]) have not worked.

Preparing for your advanced kidney cancer treatment journey

As you begin your treatment journey, the idea of exploring all of the different ways to fight your cancer can seem overwhelming. However, this first step is one of the most important steps you will take along the way.

One possible step on your journey

Over the course of your journey, you and your doctor will be faced with many decisions. Having a plan in place can help identify ahead of time which steps are the right ones for you—and this can help prepare for the road ahead.

One treatment option that may come up in discussions with your doctor is AFINITOR. AFINITOR is approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat adults with advanced kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma or RCC) when certain other medicines (ie, Sutent® [sunitinib] or Nexavar® [sorafenib]) have not worked.

If you have taken Sutent or Nexavar and have had to stop because your cancer progressed, AFINITOR might be right for you.
